Why you shouldn't be afraid of the cloud

The cloud is dangerous. My laptop, (external) hard drive and computer are more secure. That is how almost a third of Dutch people still think. Respondents to market research carried out by Klippa said they often find the cloud ‘scary’. Especially Dutch people older than 40, about 31%, find the cloud a scary idea. The average for Dutch people younger than 40 who are wary of the cloud is 20%.

So why is this? You will no doubt have seen and heard negative press on the subject. On Facebook, in the newspaper, on internet news outlets and on the evening news. Negative information is more easily digested and holds attention better among news consumers. That is what media psychologist Mischa Coster claimed on the EenVandaag programme: “Negative news scores better. At least, that is why many newspapers mainly focus on what goes wrong. They know that this is what people like to read and are keen to share. ...You can measure whether the message has been successful by how often people talk about it or share it. That depends to a large extent on whether there is a physical reaction to the news we receive.” In psychology, this is called an ‘arousal’. The arousal is generally stronger with negative news.

People are often afraid of change. This is because change is seen as a risk and risks can always turn out badly. People therefore would rather remain in a detrimental situation they are familiar with than take a risk and discover the unknown. The cloud is an example of this. Storing everything on USB drives and external hard drives will be nothing new to you. And the same applies to working everything out in spreadsheets instead of using 12Build. Right? This is safe. Well, not really!

The risks of the known

When a USB drive or (external) hard drive crashes without a backup having been made, all the data will be lost. Although, in exceptional cases, data can be retrieved from a crashed drive, this often comes at a price. Security.nl writes that human negligence is generally the reason why a drive crashes. Examples include dropping an external hard drive or not cleaning the inside of a dusty laptop. These types of problems can be avoided when you store data in the cloud. So when a laptop crashes, you can simply turn on another laptop and access your data again. Everything is automatically stored in the cloud every few seconds.

Imagine that an employee calls in with a cough and is compelled to stay home due to the corona regulations. The employee feels otherwise fine and is perfectly able to do some data work from home. The only problem is that the employee does not have a laptop with the necessary data. This would not be a problem working in the cloud. Because when you work in the cloud, you can access the data wherever you are and whenever you like. Accepting a new job can simply be done from the couch. Submitting a tender can be done with your child on your lap. And adding the final touches to a blog about the cloud can easily be done in the back garden.

Working safely in the cloud

The number one concern of cloud services is to prevent third parties getting access to your data. The measures taken by Nasdaq-listed companies to protect your data usually go far beyond those that you would take yourself. And did you know that most cases of data theft occur internally, by a company’s own employees? A study carried out by RapidScale shows that 94% of surveyed companies had more data protection after they switched to the cloud. The main reason for this added protection? Encryption. This makes it much more difficult for third parties to gain access to your data. Moreover, your data is often dissected and stored in the cloud at no less than three different places. Each piece is then encoded.

Still not fully reassured? You can also take measures yourself to protect your data in the cloud, for example with authentication. This means that in addition to logging in with a user name and password to gain access to your data, you must also enter a code that you receive on your phone. A strong password is of course a first necessity. After all, it is the first thing that hackers try to decipher.

Cloud storage is much more secure than you think. You send your data via a secure connection to an extremely secure data centre, where multiple copies of your data are stored. The possibility of your data getting lost, deleted or stolen is zero. The probability that something happens to your internal or external hard drives at home or at work is many times greater.

12Build

At 12Build we also work in the cloud. 12Build hosts its application with AWS Amazon Web Services, the global leader in hosting services. All the data is stored in Frankfurt, Germany. By using redundant services (the duplication of critical components to prevent failure), we offer a scalable platform-as-a-service solution. In short, this configuration ensures the necessary stability in service provision and security in data preservation. It also means we can quickly expand the capacity if and when the need arises so that the accessibility and speed of the application remain assured.

How relying on a good name in the construction industry can also be dangerous!

As a subcontractor, you are convinced of the importance of brand awareness in the construction industry. We get that!
